** William was also known as the Reverend William Duncan, was born January
07, 1627/28 in Perth near the Firth of Tay, Perthshire, Scotland. He was
beheaded January 02, 1690/91 near Glasgow, Lanard, Scotland. William fell
martyr during the religious troubles that afflicted Scotland at the time
Charles the Second was restored to the throne, and William refused to take
the Jacobite oath. He received his degree in theology from the King's College
at Aberdeen on 1648. When William was ejected from office for informing
against members of the resistance to Episcopalianism, his children fled
to Virginia where they settled in the region of Northern Neck.

V. William Duncan III

** William Duncan of Dumfrieshire settled in Virginia in 1724 and married
there Ruth Rawley, a daughter of Matthew Rawley, a Church of England man
who came from Wales in 1720. William and Ruth Duncan's children were Margaret
Haldane, Mehitable, Ruth Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Rawley, William, Jr., Charles,
James and Townsend. Rawley and Charles served in the command of young George
Washington in the British army in the battle which General Braddock lost
in 1755 and when Benedict Arnold, as a traitor, led a column of Cornwallis'
army into Virginia the brothers responded for the defense of their capital.
Although many of these Scotch Presbyterian pioneers were tories and aided
the British against the colonies all of William Duncan's posterity was
true to the cause of American liberty.

Sr. was married three times (Mary "Polly" Frost, Elizabeth Davis
and Nancy Nolan) and fathered 21 children. Moses M. Duncan , (George
Washington Duncan's father) and Thomas L. Duncan (the man who raised George
W.) were half-brothers, both sons of Moses Sr.
Moses is
buried in Old
Methodist Cemetery in FrostBottom, TN.

Myrtle (my grandma) was born in Windrock. She was the oldest of 12 children.
She married Walter Joseph Barry in 1941. They later moved to Oliver Springs
in Anderson County. Myrtle was a pianist and gave piano lessons for a number
of years. She was a member of Community Baptist Church and later, Mt. Pisgah
Baptist Church.
